Managing Gastrointestinal Conditions in Primary Care

Get up to speed with common gastrointestinal conditions that patients may present with. This dynamic refresher session is tailored for Practice Nurses and Allied Health Professionals who wish to sharpen their assessment skills in gastro conditions.
Aims
This training covers a wide range of presentations, focusing on evidence-based assessment and management along with safe practice. Delegates will learn how to take a focused and effective GI history, recognise and understand common gastrointestinal conditions and their treatment, and know when – and how – to refer patients for specialist care.
Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand basic anatomy and physiology of the GI system
- Identify common presentations: reflux, IBS, IBD, constipation, diarrhoea, etc.
- Recognise red flag symptoms you can’t miss
- Understand the referral criteria for secondary care
- Demonstrate practical tips for safe, efficient management in primary care settings

- Overview of History Taking
A focused review of how to take an effective gastrointestinal history, with an emphasis on symptom analysis and patient presentation. - Recognising Red Flags
Identification of symptoms and signs that may indicate serious or urgent GI conditions requiring prompt referral or intervention. - Common Gastrointestinal Conditions and Their Management
Exploration of frequently encountered GI issues in primary care, including their diagnosis, initial management, and treatment options. - Virtual Reality Scenario
An immersive, interactive scenario designed to apply your knowledge in a realistic clinical setting—reinforcing decision-making and communication skills.
