Chrissie Orchard

I recently completed the Nursing Associate apprenticeship while working at Priory Road Medical Centre within the Wyvern Health Partnership. The apprenticeship provided the opportunity to combine academic study with hands-on experience in primary care, allowing me to develop my skills while remaining embedded in a supportive clinical environment.
Throughout the apprenticeship, I gained valuable clinical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in delivering high-quality, person-centred care within a GP practice setting. I developed greater confidence in patient assessment, communication, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team across the wider Wyvern Health Partnership. A key part of my development was the guidance and support I received from my mentor, Karen Davidge, whose encouragement, knowledge, and feedback played an important role in helping me grow both professionally and personally.
One of the standout experiences of the apprenticeship was completing placements at Prospect Brilliant, which allowed me to broaden my clinical exposure and apply my learning in a different care setting. These placements helped me develop adaptability, strengthen my assessment skills, and gain a deeper understanding of patient needs across services. Being able to transfer this learning back into my role at Priory Road Medical Centre was both challenging and rewarding.
Now that I have qualified as a Nursing Associate, the apprenticeship is already having a positive impact on my role and career. I feel more confident in my practice, better equipped to manage responsibility, and more aware of how integrated care works across services. The experience has strengthened my commitment to continuing my development within primary care and the wider partnership.
There were challenges along the way, particularly balancing work, study, and personal commitments. However, these challenges helped me build resilience, improve my time management, and recognise the importance of reflective practice and support from colleagues.
One of the most important lessons I learned was trusting my abilities and recognising my progress throughout the apprenticeship.
Standout moments included applying new learning directly to patient care and seeing the positive outcomes for patients, as well as completing my final assessments and qualifying — a milestone I am extremely proud of.
Overall, the Nursing Associate apprenticeship has been a rewarding and transformative experience, providing a strong foundation for my future career within the Wyvern Health Partnership.
