Introduction

The study session begins with identifying the stages of wound healing. How to accurately identify and describe the different tissue types and their implication on wound healing. The session will explore wound bed preparation including care of the peri-wound and surrounding skin.

Key barriers to wound healing, their implications towards wound healing, and how they may affect dressing/treatment selection will be discussed and explored (there will be limited discussion around dressings – please sign up for the ‘Dressing Selection’ session for in depth dressing discussion).

The session will reach its conclusion with discussions around next steps, including care planning, continuity of care, and when to refer on.

Aims

This session aims to discuss and explore the following:

  • The Stages and Process of Wound Healing
  • Assessing and describing the wound including tissue types and wound descriptors
  • Wound bed preparation including assessing, cleansing, debriding and biofilm management
  • Care of peri-wound and surrounding skin including use of emollients and topical steroids
  • Barriers to healing- (patient and wound). e.g. co-morbidities, patient factors, wound infection
  • Care planning and the importance of continuity of care
  • Learning Resources
  • When and to who to refer on to
  • Next steps

Objectives

This session will give the attendee the theory, knowledge, practical ideas, and key elements of wound assessment and why wounds may not heal as expected.

NB: The session will not deem the learner ‘competent’.  The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the local Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available.  A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.
