Over half of the doctors in GP training are international medical graduates (IMGs). This percentage is even higher for those training in the BSW area. Many of these doctors who are on Skilled Worker Visa (formerly Tier 2 Visa) are typically not eligible for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK when they qualify and must be employed by a practice with a Visa Sponsorship Licence to continue working in the UK. These candidates have spent three years training in England as part of the NHSE programme and have excellent language skills and knowledge about the NHS.
In BSW many of the IMGs completing their GP training would like to stay in the area and are looking for employment. But only 27 of 83 (32%) BSW practices currently hold Visa Sponsorship Licences. You can help support them into employment with your organisation by becoming a visa sponsor.
Further guidance and how to apply for a licence can be found here.
The process is an online application –gov.uk/apply-sponsor-licence
You must assign a certificate of sponsorship to each foreign worker you employ. This is an electronic record, not a physical document. Each certificate has its own number which a worker can use to apply for a visa. You’ll need to pay a fee of £525 when you assign a certificate to a worker. If you assign a certificate of sponsorship to a worker on a Skilled Worker or Senior or Specialist Worker visa, you will also need to pay the immigration skills charge.
